What is a Coffee Shrub?

A coffee shrub is the  plant, or tree, that coffee cherries grow on. It's fruit, like the seeds (coffee beans), contain caffeine and are sweet to the taste. The caffeine that coffee beans develop is caused by a natural adaptation to resist being eaten, also known as host-plant resistance (HPR). The scientific term for the genus of plants is called coffea.
